The Gaudet family announces with sadness the passing of the founder of the Montcalm Golf Club, Mr. Raymond Gaudet

SAINT-LIGUORI, March 30, 2026 – It is with deep sadness that the Gaudet family and the team of the Montcalm Golf Club announce the passing of Mr. Raymond Gaudet, founder of the club, on March 30, 2026 at the Saint-Charles-Borromée Palliative and End-of-Life Care Pavilion, following a rapid cancer. He was 90 years old.

A native of Saint-Liguori and a dentist by profession for 42 years, Raymond Gaudet gave birth to the Montcalm Golf Club in 1977, when the first nine holes were inaugurated. Driven by an entrepreneurial vision and a deep love for golf, he then developed the club to reach 18 holes in 1978, 27 holes in 1988 and 36 holes in 1990. Finally, in 1995, he added the pavilion that could accommodate 350 people, expanded in 2000 for a final capacity of 500 guests, making the Montcalm golf course one of the few family courses of this size in Québec.

The Montcalm Golf Club has always been a family affair. His wife Évangéline Richard, his life partner for 63 years, was its general manager for four decades. Today, their four children — Claude, president; Sylvain, director of the golf course; Robert-André, assistant superintendent; and Ève, director of the restoration — perpetuate their father's work with the same concern for excellence and hospitality. The third generation has now begun to get involved full-time or as a student job.

Beyond the club he built, Raymond Gaudet played a structuring role for the entire Québec golf industry. A founding member and second president of the Association des propriétaires de terrains de golf du Québec, a position he held for seven years, he was one of the architects of the creation of the Fédération de golf du Québec. bringing together owners, professionals, and delegates of Golf Québec. He also contributed to the establishment of the Junior Maxi Golf Tour, aimed at the development of young golfers in the province.

He inspired his entire family to get involved in golf associations: His wife Evangeline was president of the Association of General Managers of Golf Clubs in Québec; Sylvain, President of the PGA of Québec; Claude, President of the Québec Golf Superintendents Association; Robert-André, President of the Horeb Foundation, and Eve, President of the Association of Québec Golf Clubs.

In 2019, Golf Canada presented him with its Distinguished Service Award in the Industry category, capping a lifetime dedicated to the growth and influence of golf in Canada. Laurence Applebaum, CEO of Golf Canada, noted that his contributions have left an indelible mark on the Canadian golf landscape.

"My father dedicated his life to building something that goes far beyond golf. He built a community, a meeting place, a family tradition. His legacy will live on through every game played on this court he loved so much. »

— Claude Gaudet, President of the Montcalm Golf Club
